Supporting Communities in Crisis: Evidence on Funder Motivations, Barriers, and Opportunities | Center for Disaster Philanthropy
April 15, 2026 10:30am ET/ 9:30am CT/ 2:30pm GMT | Virtual Webinar
Funders care deeply about human suffering, but what drives them to act in response to complex crisis settings and what holds them back is not well understood. The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) and Accountable Now carried out research that explored what motivates philanthropic giving in these contexts, what gets in the way and how to overcome those barriers. CDP’s Austin Snowbarger, Director of Strategy and Research, will discuss research findings with Marina Kobzeva, consultant with Accountable Now on this research. Austin will also moderate the discussion with the following panelists:
-
Jason Chau, Senior Program Officer Emergency Response, Gates Foundation
-
Gloria Doñate, Head of Humanitarian Aid, Irene M. Staehelin Foundation
Panelists will discuss how funders are providing support, the pathways for philanthropic engagement and how funders can work together to effectively support communities affected by complex humanitarian emergencies. Learn more and register here.

Unwavering | The PhotoBridge Project
April 20-24, | 18 minute film at The Sidebar - SWF
Each person photographed carries the weight of displacement, scarcity, or violence, yet none resign themselves to disappearance. They move forward as existence itself becomes an act of resistance. Resilience is finding air in the smallest spaces - a smile, a spark of life despite "the murmur of ghosts in the depths of memory." At the heart of fracture, something persists: eyes that refuse to look away. "No existence without trials, no bond without rupture."
If We Choose to Look | The PhotoBridge Project
April 20-24 | Bonn Square, Oxford UK during SWF
You don’t need to travel the world to see it differently. Just walk to Bonn Square. Step into the open air and meet some of the most extraordinary people on the planet. Through stunning documentary photography, The PhotoBridge Project brings you face to face with communities in Kenya, Syria, India, Sri Lanka, Haiti, and the United States. People who, in the face of environmental, political, and social challenges, show what courage, solidarity, and the human spirit can achieve.
