Beyond the headlines: What mobilizes philanthropy to act in complex crises | Center for Disaster Philanthropy
May 7, 2026 at 9:00am ET / 8:00am CT / 1:00pm GMT | Virtual
Philanthropic giving often spikes after high-profile disasters. Yet, crises that layer conflict, political instability and large-scale humanitarian needs often pose barriers that deter engagement.
New research findings from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Accountable Now highlight that while funders care deeply about humanitarian crises, they seek clear, proximate and safe pathways for action that can be harder to find.
This webinar will look beyond the headlines to explore what mobilizes philanthropy to support complex crises. Panelists will bridge the perspectives of philanthropy and frontline response to discuss why some crises receive philanthropic attention while others remain underfunded, what drives donors to take action, and solutions and opportunities for unlocking greater philanthropic engagement. In this session, the Center for Effective Philanthropy will present the 2026 findings of its annual State of Nonprofits survey, now in its fourth year. This newly collected data reveals both the challenges facing nonprofits, concerning trends emerging over the years, and and how leaders are adapting to meet this moment. Register here.

May 14, 2026 at 9am EDT / 2pm BST / 3pm CEST | Webinar
In this 75-minute webinar, funders share how they've integrated a climate and disability lens into their grantmaking, including a case study from the Africa Albinism Network, whose advocacy successfully led the WHO to re-add sunscreen on the Essential Medicines List. We'll also explore how disability justice connects to portfolios you're already running, and leave you with concrete steps to take in the next 12 months.
The session will include a short panel, facilitated discussion, and dedicated time for Q&A and peer exchange. We designed the webinar to be practical and solutions-oriented, building directly on what we explored in our first session. Philanthropic Deserts in West and Francophone Africa: A Conversation with Gates Foundation and Segal Family Foundation | Myriad USA
May 19, 2026 12:00 PM EST | Webinar
African‑led organizations, driven by proximate leaders closest to the challenges they address, remain chronically underfunded. They receive less than 2% of global philanthropic funding, with most directed to East Africa, leaving West and Francophone Africa as philanthropic deserts. Historic giving trends from donors indicate that many countries in this part of Africa are severely overlooked despite innovations and high impact, especially where needs are greatest. What is causing this disproportionate attention, and where can philanthropic investments make a significant difference?
The Segal Family Foundation and the Gates Foundation are two of the few legacy foundations funding in West and Francophone Africa, yet their strategies differ greatly and leave ample room for new high impact funders to support this region.
Join Myriad USA for a candid, in-depth conversation with these two pioneering funders. They’ll share insights on why they are investing in this region and what it takes to give effectively, including navigating language and culture, building trust with key partners, and structuring philanthropic capital for lasting impact. Register here.

Building Global Health Structures Accountable to Communities It Serves: Policy, Practice, and the Path Forward | Heal Initiative, UCSF
Jun 2, 2026 02:00 PM | Webinar
The global health landscape is shifting in ways not seen in generations. Aid structures are fracturing, bilateral agreements are in flux, and the communities bearing the heaviest burden are the same ones who have always had the least say in the systems meant to serve them. This moment demands more than emergency response — it demands a reckoning with who holds power in global health, and who should. Moderated by Sriram Shamasunder, MD, Co-Founder, the UCSF HEAL Initiative, this panel brings together four voices who collectively span the policy corridors of Washington, the hospital wards of rural Malawi, and the philanthropic institutions now asked to fill widening gaps, to ask not just how we survive this disruption, but whether we can use it to build something more just on the other side. Financing Sanitation in Haiti | Pilot House Philanthropy
Thursday, June 4th, 2026 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm | Pilot House, 2 Atlantic Ave, Boston, MA
Pilot House Philanthropy is looking forward to hosting a discussion to understand and honor the work of Mme. Edwige Petit, Coordinator General of DINEPA, Haiti’s Water and Sanitation Authority. An engineer-architect and urban planner, Mme. Petit has spent more than two decades fighting for sanitation to be financed and governed as a human right in one of the most challenging operating environments in the world.
In conversation with SOIL Haiti, whose long-standing partnership with DINEPA helped produce Haiti’s first government-led results-based financing contract for sanitation services, Mme. Petit will share what it takes to build lasting systems within a fragile state: unglamorous persistence, the hard-won policy alignment, and the understanding that lasting change begins and ends with the strengthening of public institutions.
SAVE THE DATE, RSVP information will follow.

Innovations in Global Health: Strategic Philanthropy Learning Journey to Tanzania | Philanthropy Insight in partnership with the Gates Foundation
30 August – 4 September, 2026 | Tanzania
Tanzania ranks in the top three among the exemplar African countries with the potential for disproportionate impact and openness to strategic philanthropic partnerships. This is an opportunity to explore the role of philanthropic capital in systems change, how it can be deployed most impactfully, and how to develop meaningful, impactful partnerships with local stakeholders, as expatriate funders. We will meet with organisations who work at the intersection of global health, nutrition, education, climate and equity. A range of organisations to visit have been chosen, all doing exceptional work in different ways. We will also see things that don't work, relationships that are complex, situations that are slow and frustrating and systems that fail, so you can experience both exciting innovations and opportunities alongside the reality of working in a low-resource setting. If interested please see the detailed information sheet or reach out to Jo Ensor at jo@philanthropyinsight.co.uk.
