Topic: Refugees in the Western Hemisphere
Explore the issue of refugees and statelessness in the Western Hemisphere, and how they differ from those of other areas in the world. We often associate refugee crises with Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, but there are very significant populations of refugees and internally displaced people in the Western Hemisphere as well, driven by lawlessness, racism, violence and economic collapse, especially in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Haiti. 8 million Venezuelans are living outside their country (over 28% of its population). Almost 7 million Colombians are refugees. In Haiti, there are currently 1.3 million internally displaced people, a number rising rapidly over the summer of 2025.
